08 / Route repair

Write a help request that can reach the right owner

Describe an observable problem, route it by responsibility and recognize what a reply actually resolves.

In this article

You do not have to solve a problem before asking for help. You do need to tell the recipient what you were trying to do, where it stopped and what answer you need. A short, bounded description is easier to route than a full history of every campus screen you visited.

The four-line note

  1. Goal: the task you wanted to complete in ordinary language.
  2. Place: the service name and public entrance, not a copied private URL containing account data.
  3. Observation: what happened, when, and what still worked. Include a time zone if timing matters.
  4. Question: the smallest unresolved thing the owner can address.

This structure is an original editorial method. It is not a University ticket template or a promise that every office accepts email. Use the chosen office’s actual contact instructions and supply only what it requests in its verified channel.

Before and after, annotated

Use the boundary, then let the owner refine it

The Campus IT Help Desk handles campus technical support and links an IT status page. The University separately identifies its Health ITS Service Desk for direct or supporting health-care roles. DLT’s Canvas page distinguishes Canvas support from video-service issues. UCard’s support page separates credential setup/use from vendor operating-system and wallet matters. These are public ownership clues, not a requirement that you diagnose the technical cause yourself.

If you choose the wrong route, ask which office should receive the specific question. Keep the previous reference number privately if the office provides one; avoid starting several indistinguishable requests merely because the first reply was not immediate. We do not promise response times, and the reviewed public sources do not establish an individual service-level commitment.

What to leave out of an initial description

Do not include a password, authentication code, full student record, identity document, financial statement or unrelated screenshot. A screenshot can expose more than the error. A short transcription of non-sensitive wording may be sufficient; if the official office needs a file, follow its verified submission instructions.

Do not use this publication’s search box as a private diagnostic notebook. Search terms travel in the page address and may appear in infrastructure logs. The route aid has category choices only and does not submit a ticket.

Read the reply against the goal

“Received”
Establishes acknowledgment. It does not by itself establish repair.
“Forwarded”
Names a transfer. Check whether the new owner and any next step are clear.
“Try this”
Provides a suggested action. Read its scope and return with the observed result if the problem remains.
“Resolved”
Compare with the original task. Can you now do what was blocked, or is a separate question still open?

These are examples of ordinary wording, not official ticket statuses. Keep the exact wording of a real reply. The useful endpoint is a task that works or a named owner for the remaining decision.

Source notes and scope

Public sources checked October 15, 2026. This is independent editorial interpretation. Examples are fictional; no account was tested and no service outcome is promised.

  • Campus IT Help Desk — Campus technology support, status link and separate U of U Health service desk. Consult this owning page for hours; the overview guide has different weekend hours.
  • Digital Learning Technologies: Canvas help — DLT Canvas/video service support and Instructure Canvas support. Instructure route explicitly does not support video services.
  • Mobile UCard support — UCard Office handles Mobile UCard setup/use; vendor support owns device OS/wallet/account issues.
  • Utah 360 help links — Separate routes for university ID access, Athletics tickets, alumni records and app issues.
